Out with old, wait a minute!!!!!
Granted not always these things well. But I do them.
I like to work ,make money . I Love my wife and kids, I have faith in God . I think I have a responsibility to others all "old' fashioned ideas.
Lets just throw out the old bad habits, you know the ones that have been around since the Big Apple Bite.
Now where is that new app for my phone ? "Son can you come in here and straighten out this desk top .I down loaded one program four times ."
Now If I can get the Big Fat little Guy to roll over . That would be a new trick for him.
Teaching old guys new tricks. Someone has to do it .

Has ebay Abandoned The Collectibles Market
Omission versus Commission is blurred in some areas. By using small sellers fees to subsidize Diamond sellers; resentment by small sellers is inevitable. With that resentment that turns to anger creates action.
If a seller feels anger at a entity ( ebay) the action most likely is to strike out at the offender. Usually by leaving or indifference.
With this comes fewer listings and that starts a downward spiral of product and a self fulfilling actualization . Less product equals less sales.
Take the not level playing field with a glitchy search , fee changes, starting and stopping programs the effect is a commission of policy that has slowed the sales of collectible items on ebay by some sellers. No real numbers just thoughts and considerations

Tribes Seth Godwin
First great show and interview I will try to get link for a rebroadcast google Author Teleseminars
These are my thoughts and notes and might be totally wrong , but the Big Fat Little Guy says go on.
Do not be boring
Go through discomfort to reach goals . That is why a personal trainer pushes you through the discomfort that you might not be able to do on your on.
Be addicted to personal growth
Leaders should lead, market, etc. "not to people" but "for people'
Tribes instead of crowds.
Uncomfortable change is touchstone of growth * a bflg idea
People buy stories.
Being leader is a decision.
There are lots of tribes in our lives , you need commitment.
Simple stories. Stories that evolves with your world view
Do not compromise your core , then compromise on ways ,situations etc.
Crowds clutter , Tribes unite.
Do You want to lead a tribe; be Authentic .
If strapped for cash spend yourself on passion
It is never a good time, Use the present.
There is no entitlement .
Books are souvenirs of ideas.
Being authentic is acting in private like you want to be seen in public.
I will buy the book as the call inspired me to further explore these ideas.
The Big Fat Little Guy just told me you can order through Amazon on this site. Look ->

Selling Strategy growing a one man band
First given:
Amazon has the eyeballs so if one could only do that ; Do that. It takes 5 minutes a book with a good complete condition description that can be copied and pasted later. I also put a location code in this field.
Second ebay
ebay takes time. It needs a picture. Also more details such as a publisher ,date etc. That information is usually furnished in an Amazon listing.
This is IMPORTANT !
Do the work, make a good listing and download to Bonazle or other websites such as bisi. These are free sites with only Final value fees. The two sites have easy download from ebay in their package.
If it does not sell on ebay you have a free listing with a chance for it to sell . These listings will be picked up by google and other seo procedures ,thus a long tail for low cost hosting
Now that one man band is a trio with an additional star lead singer.
This strategy has one major flaw that needs to be addressed
Keeping up and deleting sold stock .
A system of procedures must be implemented at the start or the one man band will be sweeping out the concert hall.
If you can not develop the procedures and the discipline to follow through daily.
YOU ARE SCREWED !
You will lose accounts and increase your work load with no new monies.
Do it all or do not do it!

from a booksellers discussion forum
As satinrose ( a good experienced bookseller) says the bad overtakes the good.
Start today a bookshelf of sale books or bargain books ,as it fills up ;cull.
A new arrivals case shelf, table. (Place new arrivals that are priced but not put in sections) getting them in the correct spot can be done as a third priority .
If these spots are close to check out they can be kept straight by one person working the shop and still check out folks and price books and get them on a table to be purchased . Then the books can be put in correct section when traffic is slow.
Time spent with customers will be your best starting practice , after you are open it will be your stock that allows growth.
A basic idea that can be used for ecommerce Part 2 later

focus , not making a decision is making a decision
story she read about Pavarotti.
Before he became famous ,rich and one of the
Three Tenors he told his father he was going to teach voice,as he continued to try to make it as an opera singer.
His father told him to pick one and be the best he could doing it. It was impossible to sit on two big stuffed chairs at once.
We know now which he chose.
Focus "keep your eye on the ball" "Just do it" "Stay on the straight and narrow " You know the drill. Write a plan and focus on it .

Why used Media sells better on Amazon?
Lets get a couple of DuH!s out of the way.
Duh! # 1. Amazon started as a media Company. they were the one with the first with most. Branding, Books = Amazon
Duh! # 2. With the customer and the brand in mind Amazon wanted to sell any and every book available . That included used ,rare , and out of print as well as the new books which they actually owned or purchased .Because of price limits they decided the really rare was not worth the risk I think $2500. is the price limit unless it has changed.
When Amazon first started they bought books from internet dealers through sites as Interloc now Alibris, Biliofind which they bought when buying a another site and Advance Book Exchange renamed Abe Books; which they have now bought and are operating as an stand alone company for now. Which is what they did with Biliofind, finally closing it down though using it as a gateway for Amazon.comAmazon
Ok the that Last Duh! and a half got a bit long winded
"but I have so much to share :-)" he said in such a concerned caring voice. Check this fromBookthink.com

Second If you are not a Christian I think it is a very good picture of the inter working of the Trinity concept of the Christian faith.

Why and will you ?
If you say yes, you will need steps for doing it. Try these :
1. Assess
Where are you now? Are you a pro, beginner (newbie), started but stymied, doing all right but want more. Decide where you fit in and act accordingly
2.Plan your road map to success.
A simple to do list is great way to start.Try using action steps an example
a.Explore more sites platforms.
b.Build your own website
Make some simple goals, production, listing goals etc.
3.Profit and Cash Flow
First Things First. You have to have the grease to run the machine. Profit margins are important. DUH ! Good cash flow will allow lower profit margins and tight controls over overhead will keep you in business.
4.Love what you are doing! Why be miserable ? Book selling has many more benefits than money. Every book bought opens a door. BUT sell more than you read.
5. Sadly and happily you will be the one that make it happen. You will find your best "luck" in any business is to focus on an end goal and eliminating conflict points ,sometimes failing your way to success. You are the one that has to be focused on making it happen.
In conclusion (my favorite part of any sermon): You can make money selling books on the net if you treat like a business. Do it!

Christina, shipping
Eddie, finding

Monroe, paypal

Greg, vp buyer experience
Nate, seller team seller tools
Steph---1546 feedback, buy more than sell, sold 6 cars, dvds, coins, 4.9 dsr, joined co in 2001, ran motors, paypal, built merchant services in paypal. Biggest Challenge? Trying to improve buyer experience, but know it’s a lot of change. Inspired by personal stories.
11 yrs on ebay and love the new fixed pricing-anticipating best year-African art, ethnic items, one of a kind. Fix price lets me list and then they will buy.
I use actual wts and $3.00 handling for all. That won’t be allowed. What about lots? Use bulk lot category. Different limit applies. Took buyer satisfaction into consideration at different shipping rates. Above $4, buyers weren’t happy.
When is new listing page to be released? NOT planning to launch in 4th quarter. Merchandising from other sellers is causing consternation, but sellers can opt out.
Need to have new users confirm negative feedback a wk or so afterward, so a seller can have a chance to contact and make it good. New users don’t know to contact. Sellers won’t do anything if they get the neg/neutral. New policy will allow buyers to change feedback coming in Oct. But will take it back to the team.
How are paypal dealing with Washington Mutual? Card is WAMU, all the accounts are fine, the deposit insurance covers. Each is covered up to $100,000. Each is an individual account, not a total paypal account. Paypal just transfers the $.
What holiday marketing? Will market across internet, coupon incentive will be expanded. With the economy think that will help. Early in season marketing.
Make watchers # available to buyers, might spur buying because of the # of watchers.
(sellers would chose whether to show it or not). Will consider.
Approved payment policy---customer doesn’t want to use paypal, others want to use MO. Been hearing this. An existing customer, as long as seller doesn’t solicit, you won’t be in violation. Larger question is buyer who is afraid of online payment, reason is more sales and more demand, with secure payment, leading to higher trust. We will be communicating, sellers need to also, stressing the payment security and will be faster.
Sell courses with more than a few books. If selling non standard item, 2 choices use flat rate shipping, under the cap-may have to shift some shipping cost into price. Otherwise use calculator with real rate. (note said 5 # wouldn’t exceed cap. ???)
All the changes-tools inadequate. TL, make changes in bulk, bulk editing in selling manager-that has limitations, such as item specifics. Blackthorne and 3rd party. Will have a workshop soon.
FVF too high plus paypal fees. Why not elimate paypal fees since it’s the same company.
Total cost is usually lower than most other channels. Paypal actually lowest on the web, do provide a service. A merchant account would be more. If can reach highest levels, ebay fees can be lowered 40%. Don’t combine fees because want transparency.
NPB have pattern, inactive for several years, a kid will buy all 30 of an item. Could you require immediate payment for new buyers or inactive accounts? We are looking at problem with multiple quantity store listings. Will take suggestion back. We think electronic payment will help, less hassle.
With payment changes, will have Ebay checkout, they will pay on ebay, no reason to delay payment. Doesn’t exist anywhere else on internet to delay payment.
Large flat rate box on paypal when???? Hopefully Oct.
Instability of software. Many errors, TL, etc. Probably unique, contact NETTER.ebay.com
How does recent sales work? New factor as part of best match. # of unique buyers is taken into consideration. Just the sales, not the # of items. Limited window of time. Constantly refresh the listings. I list 10, I get a sale, get boosted, sell out. If you relist within 7 days, recent sales will carry over to new listing. Changing title, cat. Item condition, up price, on a relist will cause you to lose recent sales advanatage.
Free shipping would be included in price-buyer gets no break on shipping. How can I discount? Are working on program.
E checks-transparency needed. Buyers need to be informed will take days to clear and need to be informed when cleared. E checks are only 3-4%. Have cleaned it up and made it clear to buyers that the seller will need to take time to clear. This has been out since June. An instant bank transfer still takes days to get money to paypal, if have a good back up source will transfer instantly transfer to seller. (an expired credit card will make an instant bank transfer into an echeck).
Dsr buyer education. Had a buyer who didn’t believe in giving 5’s. Not typical, dsrs are going up overall. How can we address the fear? Below 4.3, halting sales until dsrs go back up, not suspended.
Gallery + price difference between auction and fixed priced .35 to $1.00. It’s more because of the increased duration of fixed price.
Labels on dsrs are misleading. What are you doing to fix this? Sellers who consistently receive 4s are delivering less satisfaction. Buyers who leave 5’s come back and buy more. Sellers below 4.3 have more 1,2,3 than 4’s.
80-100 hrs to edit checks out of listings. Why, once that’s done, how can I know that paypal won’t increase their fee? Fees are competitive or better than other providers. We intend to stay that way. Have increased coverage sellers get in Oct. Improvement for casual users coming (easier to get password). Caps will be improved.
Dsr shipping versus free shipping. Free shipping/actual shipping actually get less dsrs than low handling plus actual shipping. We show as shipping charges increase, dsrs decrease. Why not 5 stars for free shipping? Fear abuse. Adding Insurance or shipping cod. Average for free shipping is 4.8 dsr on shipping.
Why shipping included in figuring paypal fees. Paypal incurs a cost of transferring all funds, not just the item price. Credit cards are the same.
Are fixed price changes only til end of year. No. With the price changes, we did launch several promotions-the media for 5 cents and the incentives around shipping- those are only til end of year. If they work, they may be built in, but as of now only temporary.
Item specific changes in media, all switched to acceptable. Can’t use TL or blackthorne to change, because they either don’t have new info or doesn’t show when uploaded. Did you update? Unique problem, contact Netter.ebay.com
For stores, evaluate the demand for the item as to whether to use fixed price or store. Core is great for high or moderate demand. Store for lower demand. Stores need to evaluate for themselves.
Thanks for patience as we go thru the changes.

From a May blog
I am reminded of the old saying "that a trip of a thousand miles begins with the first step"
So take a step! Action is the stimulus that begets growth of ideas for a bookseller niche.
If you have an interest area ,go for it ( * )
* Free idea
Green is in and should be long term . Start dealing in books about going green and polution ,healthy life styles ,the environment, conservation , global warming etc.etc.
If you are new or thinking about selling books online ask questions. You have to buy before you sell. Check prices on the internet before listing. Maybe a cell phone look up service might help. Maybe taking a $50.00 and buying books then trying to sell them is a cheap way to learn.
Take a step , it might lead you on a long enjoyable trip or short one leaving you saying." Glad I did not go there."
I am slowly learning how to blog! " enuff said".
I am writing about building a niche or specialty book business. Scarcity sells, quality sells and there are other good ways to make money selling books on the net - more about that later.
I once took a rare book seminar. The presenter told the story of a bookseller that had little interest in mountain climbing books . However, he lived in the Pacific Northwest ; there was a built in market for books about the subject. The market being both books to purchase and interested, motivated buyers. In a sense he was "fishing where the fish were."
He was offered a small, but nice collection of mountaineering books. Though,it was not his speciality, the books were clean, in good condition and a few had "the look" of something special. He bought them, priced them and started a section in his shop.
He told a fellow book shop owner of his buy and about the new section in the shop. That bookseller told him that he had a few mountain climbing books he could have a good price. He bought them. Over the next few months he bought any and all mountaineering books he could find from the other stores in the area. He built a large inventory of over a thousand books. When anyone came into the other shops asking for books on the subject, they were sent to him. He successfully operated his mountaineering section for a few years and then sold the collection to another dealer for a good profit. Over the time he had the mountaineering section, he also sold a few really scarce titles.
In my opinion, selling specialty books on the net can mirror that scenario with a few modifications.
1. Do not buy the lower priced common books; some will come in "buys", but weed them out quickly. Some may be bought as a part of the learning process; you will make mistakes - again part of your specialty education
The internet has changed bookselling because of supply and demand. To quote an eBay bookseller, "What was scarce is now common, what was rare is now scarce." Selling books at eBay auction can be giving an unintended discount to other dealers and to the collector because of time limitations. A truly scarce title, with good descriptions, pictures and good seller feedback will usually sell at a good price.
3.Using other fixed price venues such as an eBay store, prostore website, etc. might be a better way; and of course there are many other venus to sell books other than eBay.
4. As you build your inventory and knowledge, books will be offered to you and people will seek you out online so that they can buy from a specialist such as yourself.
Creating a specialty of a cultivated interest is the quickest way to begin - be sure to keep an open mind to the unexpected.
Learning any trade has a cost of either time or money - most likely both.

from My Blog Utopia
Getting Ready for Q4
Okay, eBay has made their announcements and so has Amazon (oh that's right they haven't said anything). So now sellers need to get down to work.
As an online seller, you get paid for selling product, not debating Feedback, DSRs, INRs, NPBs and a host of other acronyms. Sure, you have some very valid concerns about the future of eBay and the changes that have been made this year, but it is now time to concentrate on your business, or more accurately on the part of your business you can control.
Leave the protesting and complaining for January of 2009. Take a break to concentrate on the most important things. Commit today, to fine-tuning your business for the 4th quarter. If you sell on eBay do your best to come up with a business plan through the rest of 2008.
What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Don't change your business because eBay wants you to, change your business becasue it will make you more successful.
I'm not really a "How-to" guy (Skip McGrath is much better at that than I am) but I'm going to make some suggestions to help you develop your 4th Quarter 2008 plan on eBay:
First off, if you sell on multiple channels, I would suggest you button-up the final touches to your Amazon, Overstock, Buy.com and web site plans. More than likely, you will have a good feel for what you need to do with each of those.
Now look at the recent eBay changes and develop your plan for the 4th Quarter:
1. Develop a listing strategy for your eBay business and test it during the early days of the new fee change. Take a good look at your inventory and identify what product is best suited for Auctions, for the new 30-day FP listing and lastly for Stores; yes I said stores.
2. Tread lightly with auctions during the early days of the fee changes, make sure you have a good feel for the way the new Best Match works before committing to an ambitious auction listing strategy.
3. Next, identify the items in your inventory that sell at least once a month and add them to your new 30-day FP CORE listings. eBay says they will surface the most successful listings, so make sure each listing has plenty of inventory. Do not throw the whole kitchen sink into CORE because you will just be waisting money on a good number of those listings.
4. Put the rest of your inventory in stores, so it is available for the occasional buyer or the one who wants to add something to their auction or FP purchase.
5. Identify the things that are working and maximize them -- stop the stuff that that doesn't work.
6. Be aggressive with your pricing on the items that sell well and less aggressive with the long-tail items. Use the same strategy Amazon does -- fastest movers = lowest prices. With 30-day listings you can play with the pricing throughout the 30-days, so dial in the right amount.
7. Stop worrying about eBay and start worrying about your business.
8. Be nimble enough to change things when they need to be changed and concentrate on managing your inventory so you don't have problems.
9. Fine tune your processes so that they run flawlessly.
10. Bring on additional temporary staff if needed to help you handle the business (adding staff means you are very busy)
11. Smaller sellers, make sure you have some support to help you as well.
12. Lastly, do not do any of this for eBay! I repeat, do not do this for eBay! Do it for your customers and for your family and for your business. Determine right now -- today -- to make your business a success in spite of all the turmoil in the marketplace.
Are you ready for this upcoming 4th quarter? Well you better be, because your success is in your hands.
We can all go back to bitching about eBay in January!

I agree Randy we should worry about our own business and not Ebay.
However its very hard to have a long term business plan or even a short term plan when the landlord changes the rules and keeps raising the rent every other week or so it seems..

musing about the passing of a used bookstore
When I started buying and selling books 1993 full time,I scouted for a few years before that
( I will have to ask wife exactly when ) the late 80's I think. I was told buy your shop ,property building etc.
Sorry to take the glamor out of ( the books) but it is a business. the starting ,running ,selling and passing of the used bookstores are business decisions. A few mass great inventories and become famous.
The Amazing Fact that a person can make a living at all buying and selling books. From scraps of old ancient paper, early printings of Americana, Art books ,fine bindings etc.etc.etc. to classic paperback reprints,a thriller whether the thrill is death, murder ,romance or a story about anything. To sell the numerous books of all sorts ( All Books) is very encouraging.
I have a very expensive print,I bought at a estate sale of a book seller on a bridge or walk way in I think Paris with a wooden box and a string of other bookseller with there wooden boxes ,the lids open selling their books in their small part of the book selling world . Are they still doing that, possibly yes ,but is that the book selling world. Is it a piece of history . Is the used book store now a piece of history . I think there will always a used book store, a book fair, a street or flea market vendor ,a internet used book seller as long as people read , collect or want printed paper that is glued ,sewn or stapled together .
I mourn not the passing of any type of book selling but remember there will be sellers of books in some venue well beyond my life.
How long ( is it already starting) will it be before someone crys when it is no longer possible for a person to pay for the mortgage by selling books out of his house with a garage or added room or a bedroom full of books.
I think of being a bookseller as being an doctor, an artist, or any profession that is determined by one person skills. Some build an large industry around their skill and some make a good living , while some fall by the wayside.
just ramblings better go to work
bookblogery is a word and and a place.

hacking out a booksellers grading system
since the internet is world wide( lots of peeps selling book s0 and has changed the nomenclature of selling books.
OLD out of date words :as good which wasn't ,fine by degrees plus minus almost nearly etc. ONE universal guide of grading that of a defunct magazine is fading except in the religion of high end dealers and wantabes.
now stock market companies that sell widgets ie books and
early booksellers site that have converted to stock venture capitol companies have instituted their nomenclature for mega sellers ease not customer aid.
solution
PICK up the book describe attributes and faults if you must use a grading system under describe for peace of mind. Knowing a book with a torn dust jacket is not really very good tho the book is very clean, tightly bound without text markings . the gift inscription on first page ( not first end Paper or whatever) tells the buyer what he is getting.
well you get the idea. I am still guilty of bookseller slang
It is a niche for the small seller good descriptions ;not clueless on word fits all.
oh remember f/vg
what the heck does that mean these days unless it a dealer
this is the world wide web not interloc or a regional book fair
sorry for allspelling grammar and typos one of my editors is on vacation , the other said not now ,I'll check it later

a booksellers aid
I am just starting to play with it. My son in law a computer guru is helping me use it as data base for books , it is free up to a very large size of memory,
Any computer savvy booksellers check it out .
I have an account and in about 5 minutes of playing with it.
He had categories ,took a listing off of my website, transfered to the program. I think I can transfer that to an ebay listing pic and all , I have not tried yet as he and my daughter and sl are leaving on vacation . We have not tried in live form yet .
If it works it could be a free database , and A work area .
Do the listing once and transfer to other sites .
When the dd and sl get back from vacation I will be having boocoo cook outs and( training sessions .)
Let me know if it is something that might work for you

I have been playing
On isbn numbered books it tells an Amazon rating and price information. It pays for itself by me NOT buying books that have little value "the dreaded penny books."
I hope to be able to post links later

Misc.........................
I would of done all the things above in spite of the costs. The getting sick had no real choice to it . I let the squeaky wheel dominate my decisions of time management . Not the important !
So this Monday morning back to the "to do list" ,prioritized by the value they bring to my business and my families life. The events, the funeral trip and the health issues were all NUMBER ONES.
Where I fell down was the two and threes . I let the 5's and 1001's take their place.
Watching daytime tv for more than 30 minutes is a 1001 in my mind.
I my case researching a internet business strategy was a five ( needed ) but not a TWO.
Two's are activities that put money in the bank.
Three's are activities that put you in a Very Short Term position to money in the bank
A quick example: Buying a book is a three
Listing a book for sale is a two. If I have no books , that usually does not happen ,but when it does, buying books become twos. Shipping a book is a two, It is the last step of earning money from the sale.
There are gray areas ,but this is at least a system to urge me into correct action. It is needed and is of great value.
This blog for me today was a ONE.
thanks, bob

bookblogery Steals and Deals
Last summer I stopped at a yard sale on a busy street at 11:00 am on a Saturday morning. As I was walking up to the yard a lady was leaving with four or five books . I asked her how much were the books. She responded 10 cents each. I saw a table with books on it and found a Mr. Wizard book in total I picked up 8 books "The Steals" . I went inside and they had some cook books for $5.00 each. Seeing no sure winners , I went out side and looked some more and bought a "something I had to have" for a quarter. Total expense $1.15
* This is important *
I took the books home with a few other I had bought that day. * I researched them first on Amazon, then addall ,then ebay completed sales.
The Mr. Wizzard book sold on Amazon in about a month for about $12.00
A few others were listed and if I remember right one other sold for 6 or 7 dollars. the others were put into dealer lots or donated.
Now the Deal
One of the books was a book about night life in New York City written about 1929 or 30. It had well worn dust jacket that covered a very nice art deco designed cover. I found none on Amazon or ebay. addall had two listed ; one without a jacket listed for sale at 300 plus dollars and one with a worn jacket for over 600 dollars.
I took a quick nickel and sold it on ebay for $250.00
ebay is usually wholesale , thats ok
I think it might of sold on a fixed price site for more but it might not of.
Its summer stop at a yard sale if you have time and if the books are cheap buy a few and research them ,,its fun when its a steal and a deal.

Reflection
I use to say when gong to work I am off to the book wars. I will refrain from that now, as war is very serious . Work can be hard but is play compared to what men and women do that serve us in the military.
Thank you all for your service.
Now I will just say I am off to the book games ala the Olympics . Hard competition , but a game none the less.

Money is in the specialy or niche book field
So take a step! Action is the stimulus that begets growth of ideas for a bookseller niche.
If you have an interest area ,go for it ( * )
* Free idea

This Game is about Timing ,Risk and Money
I am going to talk about MONEY.
There are intrinsic reasons reasons for selling books, I will blog about that some day.
Money or Profit is the score card for any business. The following will be tips to make and save money. These are suggestions, use what you can:
A simple daily business log . If a techy or advance gadget geek use a pda or smart phone to down load to some money management software .
I use a 99 cent spiral three hole punch notebook purchased in school supplies sections or at office supply store . This is a business. From day one treat it like one or if you have not ,start today. I will not give tax advice but information I talk about may used for tax purposes .Ask your accountant or adviser.
What to log ? .
a. First mileage start and finish each day I use my automobile for scouting books , mailing books, buying supplies to ship books or office supples.Trips to a big box Book Store to check out best sellers and maybe a few bargain books . A good idea is to log all automobile mileage and expenses. At the end of day decide were the miles business or personal use.
b. Books that I buy cost and location .
Location or where I buy sometimes shows me where I need to make sure to scout. (TIME MANAGEMENT}
c.Supplies , gas ,an occasional hamburger for a fellow book person as advertising he might buy some of your books, discussing books that is how to learn. , meals with a attorney .That is where the Big Buys may come from. More about that in how to find books
d. Daily bank deposits for sales .I keep a large envelope on desk for all receipts including bank deposits . If I do not receive a receipt it is noted in the log and sample one is noted on a small piece of paper ; book ,date ,place and amount. Usually this happens is at a flea market or yard sale.
You might say this is a lot of work ,not really. It is just a habit.
A GOOD Habit . You are not going to get rich selling books but a good part time home based business is very possible. It is possible with enough time in the trenches to be be able to do it full time.
Lets see, we now have a system to explain where we spend our money. This information can be used for profit and loss statements, tax purposes and how effective we spend our time.
MY system works for me ; use it or develop your own. Until you have some system you are playing ,not working. Ask a small business persons how they do their taxes and keep records . Be sure to keep that receipt for that spiral note book or that blackberry. lol *
*Note ! Do not buy a pda or smart phone if you do not have one until we talk about scouting in our next blog.
Next time

How do you start an internet based book business?
We are going to start a journey in this web log chronicling a new start up of this kind of business.
My hope is that new booksellers will have enough information to make good decisions. For the more experienced bookseller whom might see a new market or way of doing something to improve their business. Please challenge my ideas, thoughts and processes . I want to learn also. Many of the ideas will be about books ,some will be about business on the net in general . I will also take ideas from the bricks and mortar business past and present.
Why do this ? Aren't you afraid of giving away trade secretes. Second question first No! A person that wants to be a bookseller will do it . Those who have a vague interest will be able to see that it is not easy , requires hard work and commitment.
By publishing this give and take form I will learn. The booksellers that receive value from this journey will in my opinion be ethical, enthusiastic people who will bring added value to the book selling arena . That has to help me and my business.
Plus I expect and will demand we have fun!
My editor in chief is still a sleep so expect some revision when she reads this .
I will be out buying books the next couple of days and will have the first leg up soon. please comment or sign up for feeds
thanks,bob
